How Rates Colleges

IN A NUTSHELL: is a resource for students and parents who are looking to find great educational opportunities. We have gone through the websites of thousands of colleges in India and evaluated them on whether they provide sufficient information to help students choose the right college for them. Our big finding is that there is very little transparency among the nearly 10,000 colleges approved by the All India Council of Technical Education. Our aim is to provide our assessment of the quality of information available and hold colleges accountable for providing this information to the public.

Our team at evaluated thousands of websites of engineering and technical colleges in India and rated them on a scale of 0 to 4. The scale captures the quality of seven dimensions of information available on a website. These dimensions include the quality of the overall website, information about college leadership, admissions, faculty, courses, tuition, and perhaps most importantly placements.

A score of EXCELLENT is the highest rating a college can receive on a given dimension. Colleges who receive a rating of excellent have clear interfaces, grammatically correct text, accurate photos of the college, intuitive menus and easily accessible information on most dimensions. for example, an excellent score on leadership transparency would apply detailed information about the leadership team, their degrees, contact information, and their background experience.

A score of DETAILED is the second highest rating a college can receive on a given dimension. Detailed pages are ones with most basic details and some additional details about a specific dimension. However, unlike excellent scores, detailed pages do not have a comprehensive set of information for a given dimension (e.g., faculty or admissions). A detailed faculty page would include where a faculty member earned her degree, their prior academic experience and their courses taught. An excellent faculty page on the other hand, would also include high-quality photographs, description of the research, publication list, and contact information.

A score of ADEQUATE implies the most basic information is available for specific dimension. An admissions page that is rated adequate has an additional page that contains a basic text description of the items required for admission to college. This is in contrast to a detailed or excellent page, that would include information about the class profile, number of students admitted, average exam scores of admitted students, as well as step-by-step directions about the admissions process. An excellent page would also have contact information about admissions staff, their names as well as information about decision timing.

Low quality

A score of LOW QUALITY implies that a page exists and may have some text regarding a specific dimension (e.g., course or placement). However the information that is available on the page, provide little information that could be useful for decision-making on the part of students or parents. For instance there may be a placement page for a college, but that page provides no data on placements and may state that they have excellent placement but provide little proof of such facts. Colleges with low quality ratings on specific dimensions should worry students and parents as it may imply that the college may not be strong in this area, otherwise it would have provided this information and made it readily available to the public.

No Page

A score of NO PAGE means that on a given dimension, a college does not have a page available with any information at all about that dimension (e.g., admissions, placement, faculty etc.). The lack of any information could apply both that the college suffers on this dimension or they are not organized enough to provide such information to students. This lack of information should serve as a red flag to parents and students selecting a college.
